So what do Jesus and Red Cross Blue Shield have in common?
If you think about the Red Cross logo, it’s a snake wrapped around a staff. Did you know that this image is actually a symbol of Jesus? In John 3:14-15 Jesus says, “And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.” Jesus is referring to the way that Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, and He is explaining that this narrative from Numbers 21:4-9 is actually a picture of the Messiah on the cross. The bronze serpent that Moses held up is a picture of sin judged and dealt with, while also representing the ancient image of healing (that’s where the Red Cross comes in). In the story in Numbers, the people in the wilderness weren’t saved by doing anything: they just had to look at the bronze serpent – they had to trust that something that seemed foolish would be enough to save them.
In the same way, Jesus hung on the cross, to die the death we deserved, and judged our sin, dealt with our sin, and gave us healing from our sin. Just like the Israelites wandering through the wilderness, we too have to look at Jesus as the founder and perfecter of our faith. It seems foolish that someone who was perfect would choose to die for us, but maybe it seems foolish because we are more acquainted with our brokenness than we are with God’s loving kindness that offers us eternal life.
We are so willing to do so much in order to insure our salvation: we’re willing to strive and burn ourselves out all in the name of religion, but we fail to do the one thing God commands us to do – to look at Him, to trust Him. Isaiah 45:22 says, “Look to me, and be saved, all you ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other.” Trusting in Jesus might seem illogical, irresponsible, and just plain foolish – but it might just be the thing that saves your life.
