What does it take for you to actually believe God is real?
Right after Jesus ascended into heaven, the apostles experienced the coming of the Holy Spirit – an event known as Pentecost. Acts 2:3-4 describes the scene: “And divided tongues of fire appeared to them and rested on each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.” The idea of “tongues like fire” suggests God’s holy presence as well as His ability to purify. It also suggests a complete and total reversal of the Tower of Babel, where God confused the languages of the people who rebelled against Him. For the people who devoted themselves to God and were saved by grace through faith in His Son Jesus, there is complete and total unity.
As the gift of tongues is a means to unity in the Kingdom of God, it was also used to unite the Gentiles to the Jews. The presence of God had only been limited to the Jewish people, and in order for the Gentiles to actually believe that the gift of salvation was for them too, something powerful had to happen – something like speaking in tongues.
What will it take from the Holy Spirit for us to actually believe in the power of God? What will it take for you to believe that God is who He says He is? What if you asked Him to move in power? What if you echoed one of the men that Jesus helped during His earthly ministry and said, “I believe but help my unbelief?” Are you ready for the answer, and are you ready for Him to do something amazing?
